Do What You Love

People say, "Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life". I believe that's true, but there are underlying trepidations that should be acknowledged when pursuing what you love most as a career. For one, a big one I think, and I believe most would agree, when you become a professional at what you love, we often start to get lost in the money and success aspect of our craft, and forget the reason why we do it in the first place.. it's what we LOVE! When you start to put responsibilities and pressures onto your work, which once used to be purely what you did as your passion, things can often start to become skewed. We start to realize we may not feel the same pure blissful joy doing our craft as a "job", than how we did when it was simply and solely what we loved doing. Being behind a camera or an editing software is a place that I've felt overwhelmingly happy in since before I was a teenager. I did it, learned it, spent hours upon hours figuring out how my camera worked, which buttons I had to press, and how to put what was in my head on a screen. Flash forward 11 years, photography is what I do professionally, and recently for the first time got flown across the country to be the official photographer at an international event. I'm doing what I love, and what I've always loved, to make my family and I money. But somehow, at times, photography doesn't feel the same as it once did. It is still and always will be one of my greatest passions, but sometimes now, it just feels different. Pressures of deadlines, clients, marketing, starting a corporation, and even the tax man, have all become stressors on my art that I once didn't used to have. I wouldn't trade the strain of freelancing for the stress and confinement of a 9-5, but often, as I feel most freelance professionals do, long for stability and certainty in our day to day lives. What have you found in your own lives that helps balance profession and passion? What continues to motivate you to pursue what you love, even if sometimes what once felt amazing ALWAYS, may not all of the time? What advice would YOU give to someone attempting to mold their passion into their careers?
